 When I was a girl, our vacuum cleaner was a squat, round thing that I recall looking like R2D2. It was loud and not very effective or so I was told because what 4 year old pays attention to such things? But our house was small so it was probably adequate.
The vacuum of my childhood would not do for today’s homes. I think of the 2,000 square foot plus houses of today, often carpeted to a fair thee well in the bedroom and family areas. Today’s vacuum needs to be a work horse.
Recently, I was looking at vacuums online and came across Miele vacuums. The Miele vacuum is… sleek! The upright lays completely flat, as in slide under the bed flat. Miele vacuums have cool designer colors including stainless, the holy grail of appliance finishes. The attachments look like some sort of dust-vanquishing weapon with a fuzzy ring on the end.
Miele vacuums come in stick and canister models too. Have I mentioned I am partial to stick vacuums for hard floors? Cleaning the tile floor in the bathroom is a much more pleasant experience with a stick vacuum than without.
I don’t know much about canister vacuums, only having owned one in my whole life (other than R2D2). I was impressed with the Miele vacuum’s control function being on the handle where you can access it easily. Like cup holders in a car, it’s the little design elements that can soothe or irritate.
But let’s face it. Bells and whistles and good looks are nice but the most important quality in a vacuum is how it works. Since I assume Good Housekeeping does not want to pay out for shoddy products, they do their due diligence to verify the quality of the products they recommend. Despite my fascination with shiny modern vacuums, I’m old fashioned enough for that to mean something.
