Arthritis is a painful condition that affects one in five Americans, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
Healthcare experts say the prevalence of arthritis is on the rise as well. The Arthritis Foundation reports that by 2030, an estimated 67 million Americans aged 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
While exercise and weight control are among the ways to help avoid the condition, recent studies suggest eating certain foods can help individuals lower their risk of developing arthritis.
Researchers at in the UK have found that women who consume a diet high in allium vegetables, such as garlic, onions and leeks, have lower levels of hip osteoarthritis.
Another recent study conducted in the UK found that eating broccoli may help guard against the condition. Scientists say they believe a compound called sulforaphane found in the vegetable blocks the enzymes that cause joint destruction in osteoarthritis.
Individuals who spend a lot of time on their feet at work or at home may consider using a special mat that reduces the stress on joints as well.
WellnessMats are equipped with Advanced Polyurethane Technology that provides a durable and comfortable surface for standing.
In addition, they offer users a safe and durable standing surface, as they always lie flat, are puncture and stain-resistant and come with a seven-year warranty.

A recent study published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research has linked flat feet with knee osteoarthritis.
According to Reuters, researchers studied 1,900 adults aged 50 and older. They found that those with the flattest feet were 31 percent more likely to say they had knee pain on most days. And they were 43 percent more likely to show damage to the cartilage at the inside of the knee.
"When your feet flatten, it can change your posture or the way you move," the study's lead author, K. Douglas Gross, told the news source.
He explained that over time the way flat-footed people stand may cause the lower leg to rotate inward and cause damage to the cartilage of the inner knee.
Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition that is estimated to affect nearly 9 million Americans.
While medication and physical therapy are often prescribed to help treat the condition, others may choose to help alleviate pain in their joints by using a Gel Pro Chef's Mat.
These mats are manufactured from a shock-absorbing gel, which helps displace the body's weight evenly over the entire foot. This effectively reduces the strain associated with prolonged standing.
Gel Pro Chef's Mats are durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean. They also feature a non-slip bottom and anti-microbial additives to prevent mold and mildew on the bottom of the mat.
They are ideal for use in kitchens, offices and any other work space.

There are many innovative products on the market to help those who live in small spaces create a more comfortable and functional home environment.
Experts say one of the keys to living comfortably in a small space is to buy items that do double duty. For instance, a console table that can double as a desk or an ottoman that can also serve as extra seating or provide storage are ideal for living in cramped quarters.
Another hint is to keep clutter to a minimum. This includes bringing new things like clothing and knick-knacks into the home as well as keeping the things you have organized.
When it comes to functioning in a small kitchen, cabinet and floor space is often at a minimum, especially in some city apartments where every square foot is valuable.
A Rack Sack Trash System is an ideal solution for small kitchen spaces when there's no room for a traditional garbage can.
The Rack Sack is a wire-framed trash system that mounts to the inside of a cabinet. It's an easy and efficient way to keep trash out of sight, yet accessible.
The Kitchen Rack Sack frame is designed to hold either 3 or 5-gallon Rack Sack Bags. It also contains a storage lid that enables you to keep a 25 bag pack of Rack Sack Refill Bags in an easy-to-access area.
This compact and functional item is ideal for any home where space is at a minimum!

Most people who use space heaters to help keep their homes warm during the winter are vigilant about safety. After all, when used incorrectly, some space heaters can increase the risk of household fires and burns.
In homes with children, the risk of burns caused by portable heaters is greater, as small children are often curious and may ignore warnings to not touch items.
According to Parenting.com, more than 5,000 people are treated in U.S. emergency rooms each year for burns caused by contact with space heaters.
The iHeater may provide a safer alternative for homes with children, as it does not become hot to the touch when in use.
This infrared portable space heater helps to keep spaces of up to 1,500 square feet warm by evenly distributing heat and without drying out the air.
The iHeater features a unique quartz-coated titanium metal heating element that is rated for a longer life than the traditional glass tubes used in most infrared heaters. These tubes have a life expectancy of 60,000 hours or five years.
The product is available in black and wood grain and can cut heating bills by 50 percent in a safe, ultra quiet and energy-efficient manner.

Many of us experience back pain and other discomfort when standing for long periods of time. In fact, in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about 46 million Americans suffer from arthritis, and Newsweek reports that 65 million Americans suffer from back pain.
These aches and pains were the impetus for the creation of Gel Pro Chef's Mats.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Robb McMahan, an engineer from Texas, set out to create a comfortable, functional kitchen mat after his wife complained of pain after preparing a Thanksgiving meal in 2002.
"We were having Thanksgiving dinner, and it was one of these deals where after spending four, five, six hours cooking she said, 'My back and feet are killing me. Go buy one of those foam kitchen mats,'" McMahan told the newspaper.
After experimenting with a few different models, the McMahans were not satisfied.
So Robb used his engineering background to create a better, longer-lasting mat – the Gel Pro Chef's Mat.
These mats are made using a shock-absorbing gel that helps to displace the body's weight evenly over the entire foot to reduce strain.
In addition, they feature a non-slip bottom with anti-microbial additives to prevent mold and mildew. The mats are also durable and stain-resistant.
While originally made for kitchen use, these mats can be used to enhance comfort anywhere in the home or office.

A new study published in the January 2011 issue of the journal Arthritis Care & Research has found that many healthcare providers are not following standard guidelines when it comes to treating individuals who suffer from arthritis.
According to ArthritisToday.org, researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia found that only 5 to 10 percent of doctors are managing patients in a way that's consistent with the guidelines established by groups like the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Rheumatology.
Instead of doctors recommending exercise and weight loss first for overweight and obese arthritis sufferers, the study found that the majority are prescribing anti-inflammatory medications and pain pills.
The Arthritis Foundation reports that a regular exercise program can help improve overall health and fitness as well as manage arthritis symptoms.
Arthritic individuals who spend a lot of time on their feet at work or at home may consider using a special mat that reduces the stress on joints.
WellnessMats are equipped with Advanced Polyurethane Technology that provides a durable and comfortable surface for standing.
In addition, they offer users a safe and durable standing surface, as they always lie flat, are puncture and stain-resistant and come with a seven-year warranty.

For many, the holidays are greatly anticipated as they are filled with joy, family, fun and gifts. However, for those with chronic diseases, such as arthritis, the holiday season can cause stress and pain.
A recent posting on an Arthritis Foundation blog offered tips for managing arthritis pain during this busy season. They included tips for making shopping easier, such as opting to shop online rather than in stores and going out with a list to avoid long periods spent on the feet. Individuals with arthritis may also choose to use gift bags rather than wrapping paper to cut down on the time spent preparing gifts for their recipients.
When it comes to managing all of the cooking associated with the holidays, the blog suggests choosing potluck-style meals instead of doing everything yourself, doubling recipes to ensure there are leftovers, buying pre-washed and pre-chopped ingredients as well as using ergonomic kitchen tools.
Those who suffer from arthritis as well as anyone else who will be spending long periods of time on their feet this season may also choose to invest in a Gel Pro Chef's Mat to ease the stress on their joints.
Gel Pro Mats are manufactured from a proprietary shock absorbing gel, which helps displace the body's weight evenly over the entire foot, effectively reducing the strain associated with prolonged standing in one place.
They are available in several different patterns and colors to match any décor.
In addition, Gel Pro Chef's Mats can be used in areas of the home other than the kitchen when needed, including offices, bathrooms, laundry rooms, etc.
