Organic Stink Bug Control: Keep The Stink Out of Your Home

Friday, August 19th, 2011

stink bugStinkbugs arrived in the northern United States from Asia. Since then, their numbers have increased rapidly due to a lack of predators in their newly adopted country. In fact, it is said that stinkbugs are now present in 33 of the 50 states in the union. That means that a majority of Americans will experience a stinkbug at some time or other in their life.

Homeowners and gardeners alike have been complaining about the critters and the stench they produce when frightened or threatened. How do you keep the bugs out of your house and how do you get rid of them without the stinky odor? Of course, if you have children and pets, you may be worried about using chemicals and pesticides for stinkbug control. You may be wondering if there are organic stink bug control methods. There actually are a few methods that you can use for stink bug control which do not use chemicals.

The first step in stink bug control is to make sure that they never get into your home in the first place. In order to do that, you should make sure to caulk or seal any cracks in your siding or in your foundation. In addition to reducing or eliminating the stinkbug population in your home this way, you will also make your home more energy efficient as well. This means that you’ll notice a decrease in the number of stinkbugs and a decrease in your energy bills too!

No matter how well you seal or caulk your home, some stinkbugs are bound to find their way into your domain. The next best stink bug control method is to simply vacuum them up into your vacuum cleaner. When the bag is full, put it inside another bag and throw the bag away in the trash. Repeat as often as necessary. Some people with a bad stinkbug infestation have been known to purchase a vacuum to use just for stinkbug control.

Of course, it may seem like a lot of work to control stinkbugs in this method. Nevertheless, it works! As a bonus, the method is inexpensive and you will not be using harmful chemicals which can affect your family or your pets.

Organic Herbicides: Just as Effective as their Chemical Counterparts

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

More and more people are replacing traditional chemical gardening products with organic alternatives.  I will admit that not all organic alternatives are as effective as their chemical counterparts, but when it comes to selecting an organic herbicide, organic alternatives are just as effective!  Most of you have probably used Round-Up before to kill weeds and grass.  Well there are a couple of organic alternatives that are just as effective; Nature’s Avenger and Burn Out II.  Both products utilize a citric acid to kill weeds and grasses that is so effective that visible results can be seen in just hours!

Nature’s Avenger has tested their product on weeds and found that it only takes an hour to see dramatic results (see picture above)! With this kind of results being obtained from organic herbicides, it’s no wonder this is one of the most successful organic gardening categories on the market.  So why hasn’t everyone switched over to organic herbicides?  Price.  It is 2-3 times more expensive to go organic.  For those of you who are familiar with organic food and other organic products this should come as no surprise.  As the popularity of organic herbicides grows, this will lead to production effeciencies that should drive down costs.  Will they ever be as cheap as chemical based herbicides?  Maybe, but probably not.  That is if the chemical variety is still available on the market.

As a brick and mortar hardware retailer and online ecommerce manager I can tell you that every year there is another chemical that is taken off the market by the EPA.  In fact Scotts, the largest lawn and garden retailer, is drastically changing up their line to prepare for this.  They have eliminated many chemicals from their product lines and are investing heavily into developing a comprehensive organic line of products.  When Scotts starts to move like this, you know there are considerable changes on the way for the types of chemicals and organic alteranatives that will be available to purchase online and in retail stores.

For now things are still developing in the organic gardening initiative.  If you are willing to pay up a little, I’m sure you will be happy with the performance of the organic herbicides we provide.
