Peter Hotton, a handyman writing for The Boston Globe, recently discussed the reasons behind squeaky hardwood floors and the ways to prevent future noises in the room. He claims that the reason that some floors may emit sounds is that they have dried out.
The squeak itself is due to the pressure of the floor against the nails, which can often happen in the winter because, during the summer, the floor accumulates moisture and expands. If a homeowner can access underneath the surface, Hotton recommends trying to tighten the beams and boards by inserting wood shingles between the them, this way they have no room to move.
If it’s too difficult to reach the underside of the floor, try to place brass screws through the surface in order to secure the beams beneath it. To help this process along, Hotton suggests having another person stand on the squeaky spots to keep the boards in place.
Many hardwood floor cleaners can prematurely age hardwood floors and cause them to be dry and cracked. Bona hardwood floor cleaning products are a healthy alternative for hardwood surfaces, because they use less water and fewer chemicals to bring a floor to a beautiful, glossy shine.
